Area code history
Originally, there were two area codes for Oxford: 0092 for the city and 0096 for some outer areas. In 1968 these codes were changed to 0865 and 0867 respectively, as part of a nationwide plan to free up numbers starting 00 for other purposes.
At some point before the mid-1990s, the separate 0867 code was withdrawn and all numbers were transferred into the 0865 code. This then eventually became 01865, following a renumbering programme that took place across the UK during April 1995.
