The Coventry area code changed from 0203 to 01203 during April 1995, as part of a nationwide renumbering. In 2000, phone numbers were lengthened from six to eight digits and the new 024 area code replaced the 01203 area code:

This reflects the fact that when first introduced the 024 area code was planned to replace a large number of other area codes in the Midlands at a later date. This would have led to a single area code across a large area of the Midlands, with all landlines able to dial each other using just the eight-digit local number.
